Brussels: The key issues that will be put on the table by the Cypriot EU Presidency, placing particular emphasis on housing, were set by the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, ahead of Tuesday’s General Affairs Council meeting in Brussels. Raouna placed particular emphasis on housing, which is also a priority of the upcoming Presidency of the Council.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus welcomes the inclusion of the housing issue on the agenda of the European Council, as stated by Raouna. “It is a fundamental social right,” she stressed. She expressed anticipation for the European Commission’s upcoming plan for affordable housing, which will be a central focus of the Cypriot Presidency starting January 1st. Raouna also announced plans to host an informal meeting of the Council of Ministers dedicated exclusively to housing.
Regarding the enlargement of the EU and Albania’s accession process within the framework of the 6th Intergovernmental Conference on Albania’s accession negotiations to the EU, Raouna highlighted the significance of opening Cluster Four in the discussions. She extended congratulations to Albania for its dedication and progress in the negotiations. Raouna emphasized that enlargement is a geopolitical necessity and an investment towards the reunification of Europe, aiming to expand security, stability, and prosperity. The Cypriot Presidency intends to advance accession negotiations with all partners.
On the topic of Ukraine, Raouna expressed grave alarm and condemned the continuing attacks against civilians, as well as violations of Poland’s airspace by Russia. She underscored Cyprus’s strong stance against any attacks or violations of sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that these issues threaten collective security and will be discussed at the meeting.
Regarding the Middle East and the situation in Gaza, Raouna voiced deep concern over the expansion of military operations. She condemned Israeli attacks and violations of Qatar’s territorial integrity and highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Raouna called for EU leadership in humanitarian aid and noted that Cyprus continues to support aid efforts through the Amalthea maritime corridor, which recently delivered over 1,200 tonnes of aid to Gaza.
Finally, Raouna acknowledged the decisive announcement by President Von der Leyen for establishing a European firefighting hub in Cyprus. This hub will serve the Eastern Mediterranean region, a strategically critical area where Cyprus plays an integral role in ensuring security for Europe.
