Nicosia: Cyprus and Ireland share long-standing, excellent relations that are anchored on common values and respect for rules-based international order and multilateralism, said Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, before her meeting with Thomas Byrne, Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, on Tuesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna emphasized the importance of the meeting, which comes just two months before Cyprus assumes the EU Presidency. The discussion focused on shared priorities and ensuring coherence and coordination between the two countries, which will consecutively hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Byrne highlighted the significance of leadership roles for smaller countries like Cyprus and Ireland within the EU, aiming to achieve concrete results during their presidencies.
Raouna reiterated the shared values and historical experiences that fortify the strong relations between Cyprus and Ireland. She expressed anticipation for fruitful discussions on important dossiers such as the Multiannual Financial Framework, crucial for both nations during their respective presidencies.
Byrne acknowledged the strategic timing of his visit and expressed eagerness to align Ireland’s plans with those of Cyprus. He outlined key areas of focus, including security and defence, global competitiveness, and upholding EU values like human rights and the rule of law. The meeting in Nicosia is seen as a pivotal step in ensuring a seamless transition and collaboration between the two presidencies.
