Raouna Briefs Cyprus Diaspora on Upcoming EU Presidency

Nicosia: Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna briefed the Cyprus diaspora in Nicosia about the upcoming assumption by the Republic of Cyprus of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. Raouna presented the goals, vision, and priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, emphasizing that it represents a significant opportunity for the country.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna highlighted that Cyprus plans to use this opportunity to enhance its geopolitical role, elevate its position in the EU and globally, and address the Cyprus problem, which is characterized as an issue of invasion and occupation of European territory. Raouna pointed out that Cyprus is taking on the Presidency as an experienced EU member state with a strong and resilient economy, committed to further integration.

Raouna also expressed the intention of Cyprus to establish a strong diplomatic presence as a reliable and stable partner, aiming to strengthen strategic alliances. She mentioned the organizational challenges associated with the Presidency, which includes hosting hundreds of meetings and conferences, attracting thousands of visitors, and organizing numerous cultural events both in Cyprus and abroad within a 181-day timeframe.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that the Cyprus Presidency is a national mission and acknowledged the importance of the diaspora in effectively communicating the Presidency’s messages in their respective countries. She expressed gratitude towards the Cypriots of the diaspora for their ongoing contributions, noting their influential presence and voice.
