Nicosia: The substantial and actionable promotion of sports is our highest obligation, stated President Nikos Christodoulides on Thursday evening while addressing the Cyprus Sports Journalists Association (EAK) at the “52nd Celebration of the Best 2024” of Cypriot Sports. The event was dedicated to athletes who excelled at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting organized sports bodies, underlining that no one is above the law. He praised the EAK’s celebration as a significant sports award institution in Cyprus, thanking the athletes who represented the country at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. He assured them of the state’s support through actions and not just words.
President Christodoulides highlighted the decision for the professional rehabilitation of all athletes participating in the Olympics and Paralympics, irrespective of their performance, and the plans for Cyprus’s first indoor Paralympic Center. He mentioned that the project is in the final stages, with the Cyprus Olympic Committee expected to present relevant plans soon.
He also stated the importance of collaboration with press professionals, including sports journalists, as they play a fundamental role in democracy. President Christodoulides reiterated that promoting sports is a top priority for his governance, with specific policies being implemented successfully. He thanked the Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA) for their cooperation and initiatives in line with the government’s objectives.
The President acknowledged the efforts of athletes and their coaches, emphasizing the need to provide guarantees for their development. He stressed the importance of identifying and promoting new talents across all sports, fostering a culture of sports education from a young age.
Moreover, President Christodoulides discussed plans to make Cyprus a hub for sports tourism, exploring the economic potential of sports. He cited a meeting with Olympic champion Pavlos Kontides about this dimension and the prospects for attracting international events, which would benefit the country’s development.
He highlighted the state’s support for hosting EuroBasket 2025, a major event that will promote Cyprus. Additionally, he addressed efforts to eliminate negative phenomena in sports, such as hooliganism, corruption, and doping, with a zero-tolerance approach.
President Christodoulides announced the establishment of the National School of Sports Ethics, providing free education for those involved or interested in sports. He assured athletes of the state’s investment in their advancement and urged them to continue inspiring with their example, promising continued support.
