Nicosia:If the Turkish Cypriot side demonstrates sincere political will concerning the 19 proposals and issues discussed in expanded meetings, progress on the Cyprus issue is achievable, stated Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis. His remarks followed a meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis noted that the meeting reviewed regular interactions between President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, emphasizing a positive atmosphere. The discussions centered on 19 proposals by the President, focusing on confidence-building measures and substantive issues aimed at convening a successful expanded conference during Antonio Guterres's tenure.
Letymbiotis conveyed that President Christodoulides emphasized the benefit of holding numerous joint meetings with Holguín during her stay. Holguín is scheduled to meet with Erhurman to discuss recent developments further.
The spokesperson reiterated the Greek Cypriot position that recording prior convergence points is essential for resuming negotiations. Letymbiotis also addressed recent reservations, stating the importance of the UN's role in facilitating meetings between Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders.
Regarding potential new proposals from the President, Letymbiotis indicated ongoing discussions on the 19 proposals, including the significant matter of Varosha and the port of Famagusta. He also mentioned requests from occupied municipalities for meetings with Holguín, which she will evaluate.
Letymbiotis expressed optimism for progress during Holguín's visit, contingent on Turkish Cypriot political will. He criticized Turkey's efforts to alter the status of the occupation regime, reaffirming Cyprus's international recognition.
The spokesperson concluded by emphasizing the need for a constructive approach to the negotiations, amid long-standing division since Turkey's 1974 invasion. UN-led talks have yet to succeed, but Guterres plans another meeting with both sides and guarantor powers, while Holguín continues engagement efforts.
