Celebrations for Europe Day and the 20th Anniversary of EU Accession

The 9th of May marks Europe Day and is celebrated every year throughout the European Union. This year, the events that will take place in Cyprus are even more significant since Cyprus is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the European Union. At the same time, with the European elections approaching, the events for Europe Day aim to highlight the importance of European democracy.

The EU delegations around the world will open their doors and organise various activities and events for Europe Day.

Thursday, May 9th

Venue: European Union House

Time: 11.00

The European Parliament Office in Cyprus and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus are organising a reception for the Diplomatic Corps and State Officials at the European Union House in Nicosia on 9th of May 2024. During the event, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides and the European Comm
issioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides will deliver keynote speeches.

The reception will follow the European Union flag raising ceremony that will take place at the courtyard of the old Nicosia Town Hall (Davila Promachonas, Eleftherias Square) earlier in the morning at 09.00.

Saturday, May 11st

Venue: Seaside Multifunctional Park, Molos, Limassol

Time: 17:00 – 22:00

In May 2024, the Republic of Cyprus celebrates 20 years in the family of the European Union. On this occasion, the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, are co-organising with the Municipality of Limassol an event open to the public. Information kiosks set by various organisations will be informing citizens about European issues.

The event will include a photo exhibition presenting milestones from the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the EU. The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyr
iakides will inaugurate the exhibition and address the public. An artistic program will follow with the Limassol Municipality Philharmonic, Cyprus@Eurovision with Evridiki as well as an original song for the anniversary of Alex Panagi and the band of Doros Demosthenes with the song Rockin ‘Through Europe. Tasos Tryfonos will be the presenter of the event.

Sunday, May 12th

Venue: Medieval Castle of Larnaca, Zouchouri Square

Time: 17:30 – 20:00

On Sunday May 12th, the inauguration of ‘Generation EU’ at the Medieval Castle will take place. The action is organised in collaboration with the Phivos Stavridis Foundation. There will be lectures and discussions with the public on issues related to culture and the EU and a video of people’s narratives about how their lives have changed through our EU membership.

At 18:30, the inauguration of the Photographic Exhibition in Zouchouri Square, in regards to our 20 years of EU integration will take place. The Mayor of Larnaca Andreas Vyras will carry out the opening of
the Photographic Exhibition. There will be an information stand of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus and EUROPE DIRECT Larnaca, where information material and gifts will be handed out to citizens.

Tthe opening of the Common Ground at the Gallery in Zouchouri Square will follow. From 16:00 in the afternoon until 19:30 there will be dancers on the street, interactive activities and games and will be held by Stavri Papadopoulou the Common Ground Performance.
