President will meet von der Leyen on migration, has spoken with PM of Lebanon

President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides has said that as there is a serious crisis as regards the migration issue, he spoke with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, on the issue, and will meet with von der Leyen on Sunday, as he announced before the beginning of a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The Cyprus President said that there is an almost daily flow of Syrians from Lebanon and that he spoke on this issue on Tuesday night with the President of the European Commission, while the Minister of Interior, Costantinos Ioannou, also spoke with European Commissioner, Ylva Johansson.

“I also spoke with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, and on Sunday I will meet again with the President of the European Commission. We asked for specific things from the European Union, taking into account that Lebanon is a country that the European Union is supporting financially both for the management of the migration issue, but also for the
management of the internal challenges that the country has,” he noted.

He went on to say that “we expect the European Union to take a more prominent role and some actions have been agreed with the President of the European Commission and the competent Commissioner within the next few days,” he said.
