Nicosia: Cyprus is ready to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday, welcoming European Council President, Ant³nio Costa, to Nicosia, as part of his tour of EU capitals.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Costa highlighted the importance of unity and inclusiveness in preparing the EU’s upcoming agenda. During their meeting at the Presidential Palace, President Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus will need to address both ongoing EU priorities such as the Multiannual Financial Framework, cohesion policy, and the Common Agricultural Policy, as well as new priorities including competitiveness, security and defence, and migration.
The President also underscored the regional role of Cyprus within the EU, stating the importance of collaborating with neighboring countries to bring them closer to the European Union. He acknowledged the shared challenges and the need for cooperative efforts.
Christodoulides expressed appreciation for Costa’s initiative to visit all EU capitals prior to the October European Council, noting that it demonstrates an inclusive approach to engaging all member states, regardless of size. He expressed enthusiasm for welcoming Costa back during Cyprus’ Presidency.
Costa reiterated the significance of unity among EU member states and the necessity of considering diverse priorities and perspectives. He acknowledged the critical timing of Cyprus’ upcoming Presidency and expressed confidence in Cyprus to advance the EU’s priorities in competitiveness and security, while fostering greater regional engagement.
Discussing the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Costa emphasized their critical global importance and the EU’s role in advocating for peace, stability, and prosperity in these regions.
The bilateral talks between the two leaders in Nicosia focused on the European Council’s upcoming agenda and the responsibilities of the Cypriot Presidency.
