President Steinmeier attends German language program in Nicosia high school

President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is on a state visit to Cyprus, visited on Tuesday Archbishop Makarios III Gymnasium at Platy Aglantzia, where he observed a teaching program for German language.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, this is a pilot program that was introduced for the first time this current academic year in Cyprus. Asa it is noted, Steinmeier’s visit to the school during his first ever historic visit to Cyprus, demonstrates the strengthening in recent years of the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Germany in the education field.

The German President was welcomed to the school by a Cypriot delegation led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Marina Ioannou Hassapi, as the Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, is abroad.

e Cyprus-Germany cooperation in the field of education.

The press release said that the Ministry of Education recognizes the benefits of multilingualism and is implementing a pilot program for German language in specific high schools in Nicosia and Limassol districts.

Through the program, students are given the opportunity to learn German at a very good level, as well as to certify their level of learning, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Cyprus. The Ministry intends to evaluate and gradually expand the program to schools in the other districts, the press release concluded.
