Nicosia: President Nikos Christodoulides has received on Tuesday the official invitation of the UN Secretary-General for the informal meeting on the Cyprus issue to be held on March 17 and 18 in Geneva, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, told CNA.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis confirmed that President Christodoulides received on Tuesday afternoon the official invitation of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, for the informal conference in Geneva. The programme of the meeting will be announced later, he noted.
President Christodoulides mentioned on Sunday that preparations on behalf of the Greek Cypriot side continue and that he was going to Geneva ‘with one and only goal, to achieve a positive result’. He noted that a positive result ‘cannot be anything other than the resumption of talks or coming close to the resumption of talks’.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
