President of Cyprus Highlights Importance of EU Membership Amid Upcoming Council Presidency

Nicosia: A strong European Union means a strong Republic of Cyprus, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, in a post on X, ahead of the assumption by Cyprus of the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1, 2026.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus’s accession to the European Union in 2004 was the most significant achievement for the country since its establishment in 1960. He highlighted that EU membership has brought substantial improvements across all aspects of daily life in Cyprus, benefiting professionals, young people, students, and communities alike.

The President detailed that the country’s infrastructure has been modernized, research initiatives have been promoted, and key sectors such as fisheries and primary production have received support. He also noted that joining the EU has strengthened the international standing of the Republic of Cyprus.

Looking ahead to Cyprus’s upcoming role in the Presidency of the Council of the EU, President Christodoulides expressed confidence that the nation will meet the challenge effectively. He highlighted the goal of contributing to the completion of important legislative dossiers and working towards a more autonomous, inclusive, and effective Europe for its citizens.

President Christodoulides also made it clear that Cyprus remains committed to the European Union and does not harbor Eurosceptic views. “Europe in Motion, Cyprus Ahead,” he concluded, underscoring the nation’s commitment to the EU’s strength and future.
