President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot Leader to Meet in Nicosia

Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erciurman are set to convene for a meeting on Tuesday at the United Nations Good Offices Mission in Nicosia. This meeting takes place ahead of the arrival of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the leaders will also hold a joint meeting with members of the Youth and Cultural Heritage Technical Committees and the Civil Society Body Council. This follows a recent meeting where President Christodoulides expressed the government's intention to maintain the status quo in the buffer zone, without violations by the Turkish Cypriot side, to Khassim Diagne, the UN's Special Representative and Head of the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

Additionally, a meeting between President Christodoulides and Holguin is scheduled for next Friday, with a joint meeting including Erciurman already planned. Cyprus has been divided since Turkey's invasion in 1974, and efforts for reconciliation through UN-led peace talks have been ongoing, yet inconclusive, with the last attempt in 2017 failing to achieve a resolution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced plans for another meeting involving both sides and the guarantor powers, aiming to prepare adequately without a set timeline.
