Nicosia: President Nikos Christodoulides inaugurated the Hadjiyiannio Health Center in Akaki, located in the western part of the Nicosia district. Officials stated that the center will cater to the healthcare needs of residents from 15 communities.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President acknowledged in his speech that the health center was envisioned by the late Akaki community leader, Giannakis Hadjiyiannis. He also mentioned Andreas Hadjiyiannis, who contributed pound 200,000 towards the center’s construction, which totaled pound 5.2 million.
The President highlighted that the Akaki Health Center spans 3,355 square meters and serves as a model for primary healthcare infrastructure. With five General Practices, it is part of the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY) network, which includes 37 Health Centers and aims to serve Akaki and neighboring communities in the West Nicosia area.
He further noted ongoing projects amounting to pound 138 million over the next three years, including a pound 10 million investment for a hospital in Polis Chrysochous. The healthcare sector will also see the advancement of other projects, such as Urgent Care Centers adjacent to Accident and Emergency Centers, which have alleviated congestion at these facilities.
Marinos Kallis, Chairman of the OKYpY Board of Directors, reported that over pound 46.7 million has been invested in recent significant projects. These include the hematology clinic at Troodos Hospital, a new dialysis unit at Paphos General Hospital, the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at Nicosia General Hospital, and other critical facilities across various hospitals.
Kallis also mentioned investments exceeding pound 70 million in state-of-the-art medical equipment. This includes CT and MRI scanners and angiographs, enhancing the competitiveness of public hospitals against the private sector.
Looking ahead, Kallis outlined the implementation of programs worth pound 182 million between 2025 and 2027 as a strategic goal for public hospital upgrades. He expressed gratitude to the Hadjiyiannis family for their financial contribution to the Akaki Health Center, emphasizing its role in providing high-quality healthcare services to residents of 15 communities.
The center will feature general practitioners, nursing staff, and specialist doctors, including a general surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, cardiologist, and facilities for minor surgeries. It is also equipped with modern radiography and bone density scanning machines.
