President-elect conveys determination to resume Cyprus talks in telephone call with Borrell

President-elect Nikos Christodoulides spoke on the phone with EU High Representative Josep Borrell expressing his determination to resume talks for a Cyprus settlement.

According to a press release by Christodoulides’ office, during the phone call Borrell congratulated Christodoulides on his election.

“Christodoulides had the chance to reaffirm to Borrell his determination to resume talks for a Cyprus settlement immediately, on the basis of the agreed framework, and at the same time he conveyed his proposal for a more active engagement with EU at the helm in the effort to break the impasse, as well as in the process for a Cyprus solution, always within the UN framework,” the press release says.

The two men agreed to meet in Brussels during the European Council scheduled to take place in March.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
