Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades made special reference to the food security situation in Egypt, in a tweet commenting on the relevant discussion in the context of the second day of the summit of the European Council in Brussels.

The leaders of the EU had previously exchanged views through teleconference with the President of the African Union, Macky Sall.

In his tweet, Anastasiades noted that “grain shortages, combined with rising food prices and high inflation, make people in many parts of the world, including Africa and the Middle East, acutely vulnerable & food insecure”.

Egypt, Anastasiades added, “is a critical partner of the EU and has a pivotal role in the Middle East” and noted that the country is also “the largest importer of wheat in the world, mainly from Ukraine & Russia.”

“A sense of food insecurity might become a challenge. EU should continue to act in support of food resilience in Egypt” he wrote.
