Nicosia: President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, welcomed Austrian Chancellor, Christian Stocker, at the Presidential Palace on Thursday evening, marking the beginning of Stocker’s official visit to Cyprus. The occasion included a dinner held in the Chancellor’s honor, signaling the importance of the visit.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the government spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, highlighted that this visit to Cyprus is among the first official trips undertaken by Chancellor Stocker since assuming office. This visit underscores the shared commitment to strengthening Cyprus-Austria relations both within Europe and on a bilateral level.
In a written statement released on Wednesday, Letymbiotis announced that Chancellor Stocker’s two-day official visit aims to deepen bilateral relations and advance the European agenda. Discussions between President Christodoulides and Chancellor Stocker are expected to cover a range of topics including the European agenda, Cyprus’ upcoming EU Council Presidency in 2026, the Cyprus issue, and international matters involving Ukraine and the Middle East.
Letymbiotis emphasized the focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in green and sustainable energy, competitiveness and innovation, vocational education and training, tourism, and culture. Additionally, migration is a priority area for collaboration between Cyprus and Austria, with both nations working closely at the European level. Cyprus also seeks Austria’s support for its efforts to fully integrate into the Schengen area.
The backdrop of these discussions includes the division of Cyprus since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of the northern third. Efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue through UN-led peace talks have been unsuccessful, with the latest round in July 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without agreement.
