President Christodoulides Urges Cabinet to Engage with New EU Commissioners in Preparation for 2026 Presidency.

Nicosia: The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has extended an invitation to his Cabinet members to initiate meetings with the newly appointed European Commissioners. This move comes as the European Commission commenced its duties in Brussels on December 1. The initiative is aimed at laying the groundwork for Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides, during a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, emphasized the importance of these engagements. He highlighted that discussions should not only cover the bilateral issues but also focus on the broader topics related to the Presidency and the strategic relationships that need to be developed. “We will be holding the Presidency in cooperation with the Commission that we are holding the Presidency,” he stated, underscoring the significance of coordinated efforts. He also mentioned that Cyprus’s Trio Presidency will begin in January, which necessitates clos
er monitoring of EU-level discussions and developments.

The President further stressed the necessity of ministerial participation in the Councils in Brussels, outlining the essential role it plays. He announced that there will be more frequent discussions within the Cabinet regarding the Commission’s developments and various dossiers. These efforts are part of a strategic alignment with the preparations for Cyprus’s EU Presidency, ensuring that the nation is well-prepared to lead effectively during its tenure.
