Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides has scheduled a National Council meeting for Wednesday, September 30, as announced by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the briefing will focus on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue and President Christodoulides' recent engagements in New York. An exchange of views on future steps to restart meaningful negotiations is also planned.
Cyprus has remained divided since Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern part in 1974. Despite numerous rounds of UN-mediated peace discussions, a resolution has not been reached, primarily due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations, which took place in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without a conclusion.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, nearing the end of his term, has announced plans to convene another meeting involving all relevant parties after sufficient groundwork. Although no specific timeline was provided, Guterres has secured agreement from both sides and the guarantor powers. Mara Angela Holgun, acting as Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, will engage with the involved parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, following the tenure of EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
