Nicosia:The European Commission has announced that Member States have endorsed the first five European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs). These initiatives aim to enhance Europe's defence capabilities by jointly developing key military systems, allowing the projects to now proceed towards securing funding.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the projects fall under the £1.5 billion European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), with the Commission allocating £325 million for the establishment and deployment of the EDPCIs. This decision supports the goals of EDIP in boosting Europe's defence industry's production capacity and developing critical military capabilities for the security interests of the EU and its Member States.

The endorsed projects focus on five priority areas drones and counter-drone systems, maritime and seabed defence, space, air and missile defence, and enhancing security along the EU's Eastern Flank. These projects resulted from a call by the Commission for Member States to submit proposals for potential EDPCIs.

EDPCIs represent large-scale industrial collaborations allowing Member States to work together on significant defence initiatives that individual countries might find too challenging to develop alone. By fostering long-term cooperation, these projects aim to fortify Europe's defence industry and enhance the EU's ability to address shared security challenges while aligning with NATO capability priorities.

The Commission will collaborate closely with participating Member States to facilitate the implementation of these projects and monitor progress. Designed as long-term initiatives, the EDPCIs are expected to continue beyond the current EDIP funding period, with the possibility of further projects being identified in the future and support continuing under future financial frameworks.
