Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said on Friday he would hold a meeting in Nicosia on March 11, with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, who will visit again Cyprus for meetings next month.
He also said that, when the ‘Cyprus problem team’ needs to be convened, he will do so.
Asked by journalists, on his way to an event in Nicosia, whether his announcement a few weeks ago on setting up a Cyprus problem team was still valid, the President replied ‘of course it is’, noting that he knows who will participate in this team and that when this team needs to be convened, he will do so.
Right now, he added, he is focused on his meeting with Holguín on March 11, noting that, ‘everything will go as it should’.
‘Our sole goal is none other than the resumption of the talks from where they were interrupted in Crans-Montana’, President Christodoulides said.
It is recalled that Holguin announced in a written statement earlier this month that she would go to London in
the first week of March and then return to Cyprus for new meetings with the leaders of the two communities.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
