President Christodoulides Describes Constructive Discussion with Turkish Cypriot Leader

Nicosia:President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has characterized his recent meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhrman as "very good and constructive." The discussions are set to continue during a forthcoming visit to Cyprus by María Ángela Holguín, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides, speaking to journalists on Tuesday afternoon after returning to the Presidential Palace, emphasized the mutual decision not to issue any joint statements or communiqués on specific issues until further discussions occur in Holguín's presence.

President Christodoulides highlighted that constructive meetings have been held with the Technical Committees on Youth and Cultural Heritage, as well as with the Civil Society Advisory Body. These sessions presented various views and suggestions to be further explored in upcoming meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leader.

When asked about the absence of a joint communiqué, President Christodoulides clarified that it was a mutual agreement and not due to any impasse. He reiterated the positive nature of the discussions and requested not to be questioned further on the matter.

A meeting with the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy is scheduled for this Friday, and a joint meeting involving President Christodoulides, the Turkish Cypriot leader, and Holguín is also planned. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third, with previous UN-led peace talks failing to achieve a resolution. The last significant negotiations took place in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, but ended without a conclusion.
