President Christodoulides and Von Der Leyen to Inaugurate EU Regional Firefighting Center

Nicosia: The Regional Firefighting Center of the European Union will be inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the sidelines of an informal European Council meeting, taking place in Cyprus on April 23 and 24.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Republic of Cyprus currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU for a six-month term that started on January 1st, 2026, as part of a Trio Presidency along with Poland and Denmark. As Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated during a media briefing on Tuesday at the Presidential Palace, this initiative is the result of systematic cooperation to implement a proposal by the Republic of Cyprus, highlighting the country's active role in shaping European civil protection planning.

'This is a defining moment that highlights our country's strategic role within the framework of European and regional civil protection, strengthening Europe's collective capacity to respond to the challenges of the climate crisis. At the same time, this development substantially upgrades the position of the Republic of Cyprus, establishing it as a regional hub for tackling forest fires in the Eastern Mediterranean,' he said.

According to Letymbiotis, the practical importance for Cyprus is twofold. On the one hand, it enhances the ability to effectively respond to increasingly demanding climate conditions in a particularly vulnerable region. On the other hand, it strengthens the conditions for regional cooperation through joint operational planning and coordinated action with countries in the region.

'In essence, it is tangible confirmation of the cooperation model promoted by the Republic of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, a model that translates into concrete results, joint structures, and strengthened operational readiness,' he added.

He continued by noting that the international dimension of the initiative is further reinforced, as the project is part of the Mediterranean Pact, which sets fire preparedness, civil protection, and multi-risk management as key pillars of cooperation with countries of the Southern Neighbourhood, strengthening cross-border cooperation and the collective European response.

'The timing of Cyprus holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026 ascribes particular significance to this development. The Center is a characteristic example of the strategic choice to strengthen the regional dimension of the European Union and to deepen cooperation with countries in the region through projects with tangible and immediate impact, a strategic priority of the Cypriot Presidency,' he noted.

As he mentioned, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the Center will operate as an operational pillar for the prevention and response to forest fires, enhancing coordination, the exchange of expertise, and the pre-positioning of forces.

'At a time of increased environmental and geopolitical challenges, the Republic of Cyprus is strengthening its role as a reliable partner and a hub of cooperation, confirming in practice that outward-looking policies and strategies of cooperation deliver concrete results both for the country itself and for Europe as a whole,' he concluded.
