President briefs EU counterparts on Cyprus problem proposal on Friday

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides is set to brief his EU counterparts about his proposal on a more active engagement of the EU in the efforts for Cyprus reunification on Friday.

In the meantime, government sources said that on Thursday he had a conversation with German chancellor Olaf Scholz on the margins of the European Council on Thursday evening.

The President’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the opportunity for the President to brief his counterparts on his proposal for the Cyprus Problem, will take place on Friday.

The President is expected to refer to his proposal for an enhanced involvement of the EU in the efforts to restart the negotiations, after the speech of European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.

Government sources told journalists that during his exchange with Christodoulides, the German Chancellor said that he recognises the geopolitical benefits that can come from his proposals and from a possible solution of the Cyprus problem, and also expressed the wish to visit Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
