Presence of sea turtles in Cyprus’ waters normal this period, no need for concern Fisheries Department says

Cyprus Department of Fisheries and Marine Research issued an announcement on Monday to inform the public that the presence of sea turtles in the island’s shallow waters is normal this period of the year and there is no need for concern.

In the announcement the Fisheries Department says that during the summer season, the Green Turtles mate in the shallow waters and they eat mainly marine plants and crustaceans (ie crabs, etc.) . Caretta-Carreta eats mainly fish.

Both species are spectacular and their presence in our waters is part of their life cycle for both feeding and mating and spawning, the announcement says.

Sea turtles are migratory species and they use Cyprus beaches of Cyprus for their nesting and then, at the end of the spawning season, most of them start their journey to other areas of the Mediterranean.

Public is kindly asked not to bother them and to observe them in distance, without touching or feeding and to also avoid too many pictures.

Citizens are asked to contact the Department in case they see an injured turtle.
