A technical fault that occurred at 6 pm on Wednesday led to power cuts in several areas in Cyprus with the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) appealing to the public to limit electricity consumption.

In a statement, TSOC said that at 18:03 local time a technical fault occurred in the power generation system, resulting in the loss of generation unit AT/S 3 at the Vasilikos Power Station loaded at 54 MW, resulting in the rejection of consumer loads in various areas of Cyprus.

Continuous efforts are being made to restore electricity supply as soon as possible, the operator said.

Meanwhile, a technical fault in the power generation system occurred at 5:29 pm, resulting in the loss of generation unit AT/S 4 at the Dhekelia Power Station. According to TSOC, the loss of power generation did not cause a consumer load rejection.

The Cyprus Transmission System Operator appeals to the public to limit electricity consumption between the hours of 18:00 and 22:00 in order to limit the necessary electricity cuts
, following failures which occurred in the generation system.

According to an update, TSOC is implementing rotational nationwide consumer load curtailments, the duration of which is not expected to exceed 40 minutes.

Dimitris Nathaniel, Acting Spokesperson of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, told CNA that the nature of the failure is such that it affects areas across the country. He noted that EAC crews are already on the spot trying to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, EAC’s website said that due to a technical problem, communication with the Authority’s Customer Service Centre has been temporarily interrupted and efforts are being made to restore the fault as soon as possible.
