Nicosia: The Police are on full alert, carrying out intensive checks on the road network ahead of the August 15 public and religious holiday in Cyprus, as increased traffic is expected on both motorways and the wider road network, particularly in mountainous and coastal areas, Police Headquarters Communications Officer Michalis Michael has told the Cyprus News Agency.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Police have drawn up the necessary action plans and will maintain a presence on the roads throughout the period, both to ensure road safety through traffic checks and to aid motorists wherever and whenever necessary. The August 15 period is anticipated to see a rise in vehicle traffic, especially on motorways and other roads leading to popular areas due to the long weekend.
Michael emphasized that the Police conduct daily traffic checks aimed at preventing serious and fatal road collisions, and these efforts are not limited to the August 15 period. The ongoing pan-European campaign by ROADPOL, the European Roads Policing Network, in which the Cyprus Police are participating, is focused on speeding and will conclude on Sunday, August 9.
Michael noted that the Police's intensive checks cover all serious traffic offences, not just speeding. The focus is on behaviours that contribute to serious and fatal collisions, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failing to wear a seat belt or helmet, and using a mobile phone while driving. Additionally, efforts to raise public awareness and enforce regulations concerning personal mobility devices, like electric scooters, have intensified.
Michael pointed out that with the expected increase in traffic, particular attention is required on motorways and roads leading to mountainous and coastal areas due to their higher risk. He stressed the necessity for increased vigilance among all drivers as more vehicles will be on the roads.
He concluded by urging the public to exercise caution while traveling. He reminded everyone to drive responsibly, respect other road users, and be aware that every choice on the road can affect human lives.
