House Speaker receives outgoing Israeli Ambassador

House Speaker Annita Demetriou received on Monday the outgoing Israeli Ambassador Shmuel Revel, with whom she discussed the bilateral relations, the trilateral agreements with countries in the region and common challenges.

An announcement issued by the Parliament says that they both referred to the bilateral ties on the basis of common principles and values and the geographical proximity of the two countries.

The House President thanked the Ambassador for his essential contribution in further strengthening the dialogue and cooperation between the parliaments of Cyprus and Israel, as well as regards the bilateral and tripartite agreements between Cyprus, Greece and Israel.

AG and Speaker discuss need to update outdated laws

Attorney-General George Savvides and House President Annita Demetriou, discussed the need to replace old laws on quarantine and tackling fires with new, updated rules that will be more effective and with stricter fines.

The two met on Monday in a formal yet important meeting, according to Savvides, who said they examined a new legislation to tackle the problem of fires with stricter sentences.

He also said they discussed replacing the outdated Quarantine Law with a law for Contagious diseases which will still give the cabinet and the Health Ministry the right to issue decrees to avert the spread of diseases, like COVID-19 which developed into a pandemic.

Cyprus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs holds contacts with his counterparts of France, Egypt and India

Cyprus` Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, held contacts with the Foreign Ministers of France, Egypt and India, on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

Specifically, according to a diplomatic source, it was “particularly important for Cyprus to organize the working breakfast for the EU Foreign Ministers, with the Egyptian Foreign Minister as a guest”. According to the same source, the latter praised the role of Cyprus in the region, while he referred to his interventions in the destabilizing role of Turkey002E

Cruise season kicked off for DP World Limassol

This year’s cruise season has finally kicked off for DP World Limassol, as “Jewel of the Seas” and “Celestyal Olympia” departed on their inaugural sailings from Limassol port on Saturday July 10th.

A press release by DP World says that this is the first time that two cruise lines are calling Limassol their home port, making this a huge milestone for the Company as well as Cyprus.

“Royal Caribbean’s “Jewel of the Seas” will be sailing from Limassol until late October 2021, carrying out seven-night cruises that will be calling at Piraeus, Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, while “Celestyal Olympia” will be operating its new seven-night itinerary until late August 2021, calling at Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini, Ag.

EU ministers reject the two state solution in Cyprus says Borrell

The EU ministers today rejected the two state solution in Cyprus, EU High Representative on Foreign Policy noted at a Press Conference in Brussels, following the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) convened earlier. He also reaffirmed that the Varosha status is set by UNSC resolutions, calling Turkey to refrain from provocative actions.

Cyprus Health Ministry updates epidemiological risk assessment of countries

Cyprus’ Ministry of Health announced on Monday an update categorisation of countries based on their epidemiological risk assessment.

The new categorisation, which will come into force on Thursday 15 of July, includes the following changes: Sweden and Latvia move from the orange to the green category, Belgium, Greece and Luxembourg move from the green to the orange list, while Portugal moves from the orange to the red category.

The press release says that following a decision of the Council of Ministers, on 18 February 2021, regarding the Action Plan for the gradual resumption of flights and the re-opening of airports, the Epidemiological Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Health has made a re-evaluation of the epidemiological situation in various countries as regards COVID-19.

More than 13% of y?uth aged 16-17 got their 1st dose of COVID vaccine

A total of 13.3% of youth aged 16-17 got their 1st dose of COVID vaccine, the Health Ministry announced Monday, based on data by July 8th.

The period between 2-10 July a total of 22,541 appointments were booked. As regards the vaccination program for the general population, figures up to yesterday show that 66.8% got their 1st dose and 54.7% concluded their vaccination scheme.

All issues are being considered regarding the pandemic, said on Sunday Government Spokesman Marios Pelecanos.

Speaking from Pafos, he told reporters that some parameters need to be taken into consideration, for instance, the number of cases and where these cases come from.

“You must understand that several parameters are taken into consideration, such as the issue of age and most important, hospitalisations”, the Spokesman said.

I would like the UNSG to be more clear on the issue of Famagusta and in general, Cyprus President says

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has said that he would like the UN Secretary – General to be more clear as regards the issue of Turkish occupied Famagusta and in general.

In statements to the media, after the memorial service for the 13 victims of a huge blast at the naval base “Evangelos Florakis”, in Mari, ten years ago, and invited to comment on the draft report of the UN Secretary – General on Cyprus, Anastasiades said that what has been written down is being evaluated point by point, and any comments will be conveyed to the UN in the coming days.

Invited to comment to the UNSG`s reference to “equal inherent rights”, Anastasiades said that “it is well known that in the 11th of February 2014 Declaration and the Constitution of 1960 a form of inherent rights is being recognised for the people of Cyprus, either Turkish Cypriots or Greek Cypriots.

Steps to combat fires at meeting chaired by Cyprus President on Monday

Decisions for improving measures aiming at combating fires are expected to be taken during a meeting under Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, on Monday, with the participation of all relevant services.

Reliable sources have told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that during the meeting participants are expected to review actions that have been undertaken, discuss possible shortcomings and omissions and take decisions for improving the measures taken. Moreover the readiness of the services, the existing needs and the implementation of the measures taken to prevent and fight fires will be on the agenda.
