Nicosia: Outgoing German Ambassador to Cyprus, Anke Schlimm, has expressed her country’s appreciation for the pivotal role of Cyprus, as the closest EU member state to the Middle East region.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President of the House, Annita Demetriou, received the German Ambassador on Wednesday on the occasion of the completion of her term in Cyprus. During the meeting, the President of the House expressed her appreciation for the Ambassador’s contribution to further strengthening relations between Cyprus and Germany and the two Parliaments. The Ambassador thanked Demetriou for the close cooperation with the House of Representatives, it is added.
Demetriou noted Germany’s principled stance and firm support for the Cyprus problem and the ongoing efforts to resume substantive talks within the agreed framework, with a view to resolve the problem in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and European principles and values.
She referred to Germany’s leading role in the European Union, particularly in the current geopolitical context, where there is increasing instability and uncertainty. She stressed the importance of unity within the European Union and a common strategy for addressing the serious challenges facing Europe today.
The Ambassador of Germany reaffirmed her country’s firm position of principles regarding the Cyprus problem and the efforts to reach a solution. She also noted the regular contacts and the convergence of the two countries on issues of major mutual interest.
The German Ambassador expressed her country’s appreciation for the pivotal role played by Cyprus, as the closest EU member state in the Middle East region, particularly with regard to the removal of citizens of various countries from the war zone and for the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to provide all possible assistance and contribute to building conditions of peace and security in the region.
The press release said that they also exchanged views on issues of international interest, focusing on the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.
