Nicosia: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgency of finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, stating that the current moment is crucial to prevent Cyprus from becoming embroiled in further unnecessary events. Guterres expressed these views during his meeting at the Presidential Palace with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the main purpose of Guterres' visit is to establish a substantive framework that will guide future efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue before his term ends. The UN Secretary-General reiterated that the United Nations is not in Cyprus to impose a solution but to facilitate a process that aligns with the will of the island's people.
During the meeting, President Christodoulides expressed optimism, stating the need for positive developments in Cyprus, the region, and internationally. He underscored the importance of Guterres' support and political commitment during these challenging international times. Christodoulides highlighted the responsibility to uphold international law, values, and principles.
Guterres acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that any resolution would have a significant positive impact on Cyprus and be beneficial within the broader regional context. He expressed his commitment to supporting the efforts of the Cypriot communities with humility, emphasizing that his role is not to prescribe solutions but to aid in the process.
The visit aims to include open discussions with the two leaders, civil society representatives, and the bicommunal Technical Committees. Cyprus has remained divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be reached, with the last negotiations in 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without a consensus.
