No Problems with Electricity Production System on Thursday, Say CTSO-EAC

Nicosia: No problems are expected regarding the daily production of the electricity system on Thursday, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator Spokesperson, Hara Koushappa, told CNA, asked about the state of the system, in view of the severe weather phenomena expected to hit the country in the near future.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the state of the generation system on Thursday morning was very good, following an equally good operation during the night. Koushappa added that two generation units that had experienced faults were made available to the Operator, one at Dhekelia with a capacity of 60 Mw and one at Vasiliko with a capacity of 40 Mw respectively. She also noted that the maximum generation capacity today is estimated at 1,112 Mw, 40-50 Mw is expected to be generated from wind turbines during peak hours, while there are also systems in reserve, all of which, she said, pointing out to adequacy in terms of meeting demand.

“It is possible that more units may be delivered soon, in any case the situation is being monitored and evaluated daily,” she concluded. The availability of two additional generation units was also confirmed by the EAC Spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou, adding that along with another unit that reentered the system yesterday, the situation is now “significantly improved.” She added that the Authority remains on alert in view of the weather phenomena expected to affect mountainous areas in particular as to intervene where necessary.

In addition, according to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorology on Thursday morning, the cold air mass ‘Coral’ is beginning to affect the region, with the height of snow in Troodos Square at 11.00 am reaching 2 cm. As stated, in the afternoon, the weather will be partly cloudy and mostly cloudy in places, with isolated showers expected at times, while tonight it will remain partly cloudy, without excluding isolated light rain on the north and east coasts. The temperature will drop to around 3 degrees in the interior, around 5 degrees on the coast and around -4 degrees in higher altitudes, frost will prevail in the mountainous and locally in the semi-mountainous areas, while frost cannot be ruled out in leeward areas of the interior, the bulletin concludes.
