Limassol: There were no active fronts on Saturday of the deadly fire that broke out in the village of Malia in the Limassol district on Wednesday afternoon, but still a high risk of reignition around the perimeter.
According to Cyprus News Agency, information from the Operations Coordination Centre in Limassol indicated that flare-ups occurred but were contained before spreading. Strong firefighting forces remained in the area overnight to monitor and manage potential risks.
As stated to CNA by the Deputy District Officer of Limassol, Electra Panayiotou, district administration teams will continue assessing the damage on Saturday. By five o’clock on Friday afternoon, reports indicated damage to 191 homes, with 93 completely destroyed across fifteen villages.
Additionally, 120 vehicles of various types were burned, and there are 31 reports of damage to mobile homes, warehouses, buildings, and a restaurant. The number of affected properties is expected to rise in the coming days.
The communities of Souni-Zanatzia, Agios Therapontas, Lofou, and Vouni suffered the most significant damage. During the night, members of the Mobile Immediate Action Unit and the Police patrolled the fire-stricken areas, responding to reports of thefts from damaged houses, mainly in the village of Souni-Zanatzia.
