Nicosia: The new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne, has arrived in Cyprus, expressing his eagerness to collaborate with various partners on the island.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a UN announcement confirmed that Diagne has formally taken over his responsibilities in Cyprus. He replaces Colin Stewart, who completed his term in August 2025. Diagne, upon his arrival, stated, “I am honoured and grateful to be here in Cyprus as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General. I look forward to working with all our partners across Cyprus.”
Diagne brings over 25 years of experience in international affairs and senior leadership within the United Nations system. His extensive background is expected to guide his efforts in the ongoing mission of the UN in Cyprus.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace negotiations, a resolution has yet to be achieved. The most recent discussions, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without a conclusive agreement.
