New Orange Warning Issued for Extremely Low Temperatures in Mountainous Areas

Nicosia: A new orange warning for extremely low temperatures was issued on Sunday by the Department of Meteorology and will be in effect from Sunday night until Monday morning as the cold air mass Coral continues to affect the region. As stated, the minimum temperature over the higher mountainous areas is expected to fall to -10 degrees Celsius.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the warning is in effect for the period between 10 pm on Sunday, February 23 and 8 am on Monday, February 24. The latest weather forecast indicates that the weather on Sunday will be partly cloudy with light snowfall likely to occur locally, mainly at the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. The temperature will reach 8 degrees inland, around 10 degrees on the coast, and -2 degrees at the higher mountainous areas, while frost will form at the mountains and locally at the semi-mountainous areas.

In the evening, the weather will remain partly cloudy. The temperature is expected to drop to 0 degrees in the interior, around 2 degrees
on the coast, and -10 degrees at the higher mountainous areas. Frost will form at the mountainous areas, the lowlands, and inland.

Temperatures will rise slightly on Monday but will remain well below seasonal averages. On Tuesday and Wednesday, a gradual noticeable rise is expected. The snow depth, at the time of the forecast issue, was 3 cm at Troodos Square and 5 cm at the highest peak.
