Limassol: The Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) has released a new, final, and more accurate mapping of the burnt area in the Limassol district.
According to Cyprus News Agency, previous estimates indicated that the burnt area ranged between 120.7 and 124 square kilometers. These initial assessments were based on satellite images with varying resolutions, starting at 300 meters and later refined to 3 meters. The updated mapping leverages very high-resolution WorldView Legion Ortho-ready Bundle satellite images with a resolution of 30 centimeters, providing exceptional detail.
The WorldView Legion image, provided by GEOSERVE NL on July 28, 2025, was noted for being completely free of clouds and smoke, thus enabling more precise calculations of the burnt area, even down to individual buildings. For this latest analysis, the GTFire tool was utilized. GTFire is an innovative forest fire monitoring tool that integrates real-time satellite data with predictive models. The burnt area was recalculated to be 104 square kilometers. However, by applying spatial gap-filling techniques, the estimate closely aligns with the initial rough assessments.
