New Ambassador hopes that friendly Cyprus-Russia relations will be maintained, position on Cyprus issue unchanged

New Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Ziazikov expressed hope that the friendly relations between the two countries will be maintained, conveying at the same time the invariable position of his country as regards the Cyprus issue.

A post on Russian Embassy’s facebook page says that today, during a solemn ceremony at the Presidential Palace, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation Murat Ziazikov presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades.

Following the ceremony, the post says, a conversation between the Ambassador and the President of the Republic took place, which was held in a warm atmosphere.

“They emphasized that Russia and Cyprus are united by decades of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation, the unity of spiritual and cultural values. Hope for the maintaining friendly Russian-Cypriot relations was expressed”, the post reads.

Ambassador of the Russian Federation Murat Ziazikov confirmed to the President of the Republic the invariability of the position of the Russian Federation on the Cyprus issue, based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
