Larnaka:The DesirMed festival in Larnaka emphasized the significance of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and coastal resilience over its two-day span. The event featured workshops and debates that focused on local and regional initiatives, enhancing regional cooperation within Integrated Coastal Zone Management.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the festival was organized by the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, and PAP/RAC, with support from DesirMED partners, including the lead partner CMCC (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change).

A centerpiece of the festival was the Giant Interactive Map at Europe Square on the Phinikoudes promenade. This interactive map allowed children and adults to explore a miniature Mediterranean basin, discovering species and ecosystems while understanding climate challenges affecting the region.

Larnaka's vice mayor, Iasonas Iasonides, addressed participants, emphasizing Cyprus's commitment to environmental preservation despite its small size. He encouraged the exchange of ideas to improve communities and the planet.

Susanne Pedersen, Director of the Centre for Science and Knowledge at IUCN, highlighted the interconnected nature of Mediterranean climate and biodiversity challenges. She stressed the importance of knowledge, cooperation, and participation in building resilience and noted that Mediterranean regions are learning from each other to adapt effectively.

The DesirMed festival facilitated discussions among policymakers and specialists on Nature-based Solutions and resilient coastal planning. The Giant Interactive Map was produced by the IUCN and Giant Interactive Maps under the DesirMED project, funded by the European Union and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. Local partners included the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, the Cyprus Energy Agency, and the Municipality of Larnaka.
