National Parliaments to become more functional, says acting House President

In order to achieve more democracy and the citizens’ trust in state institutions and bodies, national parliaments must become more functional and responsible, said acting House President Andros Kyprianou, before the Plenary, on Thursday, on the occasion of World Parliament Day on June 30. He said that national parliaments should engage in fruitful self-criticism, which will allow them to improve their image in terms of the work they produce, with the aim of creating conditions for decent living and well-being for all citizens. Kyprianou said that on the occasion of the World Parliament Day Cyprus Parliament reaffirms its unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and undertake the commitment to worthy representation of the people in the difficult circumstances and challenges we are faced with. He also said that World Parliament Day is an important opportunity to reflect and review the progress we have made as a representative body in achieving key goals on major issues such as the protection of human rights, the balanced representation of women and youth in politics, the adaptation to digital technology and the prevention of the climate crisis, which seriously threatens our planet. Kyprianou said that in this direction, the Parliament actively participates in the efforts to deal with climate change, implementing various actions in order to become an all-green parliament, in the framework of the campaign of the Inter-Parliamentary Union “Parliaments for the Planet – Action for the climate starts at home”.
