Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Discusses EU Accession and Cyprus Issue with House President

Nicosia:Moldova's European ambitions and the Cyprus issue were central topics during a meeting between House President Annita Demetriou and Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Pop?oi. The discussion took place as Pop?oi conducted an official visit to Cyprus on Monday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting highlighted the strong friendship between the two nations, founded on mutual respect and shared European principles. Both parties expressed a common intention to enhance bilateral relations and emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in tackling contemporary security challenges amid broader geopolitical developments.

Demetriou acknowledged Moldova's support on the Cyprus issue and reiterated Cyprus' commitment to resuming negotiations for a solution based on international law and UN resolutions. She voiced concerns over the Turkish invasion's aftermath and ongoing occupation of Cypriot territory, attributing the lack of negotiation progress to Turkey's delaying tactics.

Furthermore, Demetriou affirmed Cyprus' support for Moldova's EU accession efforts, emphasizing the need for European solidarity and a unified strategy towards countries that breach international law. She noted that the accession process demands consistency and political commitment.

Pop?oi expressed gratitude for Cyprus' support of Moldova's EU path, considering full accession a national strategic goal. He discussed ongoing efforts to align Moldovan legislation with EU standards and the impact of the Ukraine conflict on Europe. Accompanying Pop?oi were Moldova's Ambassador to Cyprus, Andrei Popov, and Chief of Staff Silvia Pojoga.
