Brussels:The European Union has expressed strong disapproval of the ratification of the 2019 Turkey-Libya Memorandum of Understanding on maritime delimitation by Libya's House of Representatives. EU Ambassador to the UN, Stavros Lambrinidis, voiced this stance following a joint statement delivered by Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on behalf of Greece, the UAE, Bahrain, Cyprus, and Egypt.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Lambrinidis emphasized that the EU's position on the matter remains "firm and clear." The memorandum is seen by the EU as infringing upon the sovereign rights of third states and is deemed non-compliant with the law of the sea, as outlined in the European Council conclusions of December 2019 and reiterated in June 2025.
Lambrinidis reiterated that the memorandum is considered null and void by the EU and cannot produce any legal consequences for third states. He further highlighted the EU's strategic interest in maintaining a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean, calling for respect for sovereign rights in line with EU and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
