Nicosia: The need to continue investing in cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and the European Defence Agency (EDA) was emphasized by Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Anna Aristotelous, during a seminar in Nicosia. Aristotelous highlighted the critical role of active involvement from all parties in the ongoing programs and actions facilitated by the EDA, describing these initiatives as a vital bridge between Cyprus and European defence developments.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Aristotelous expressed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the EDA, recognizing it as a key pillar for the strategic autonomy of the European Union. She noted that collaboration among member states not only enhances the EU’s overall defence capabilities but also reduces fragmentation within the defence industry. This cooperation, she stated, fosters synergies that lead to more efficient and sustainable defence investments.
Aristotelous pointed out that since Cyprus’s accession to the EU in 2004, coinciding with the establishment of the European Defence Agency, the country has actively participated in EDA initiatives. This involvement allows Cyprus to partake in research and development projects, improve the operational capabilities of its Armed Forces, and enhance interoperability with other member states.
She further elaborated on the significance of the Ministry of Defence’s participation in the EDA, describing it as crucial for Cyprus’s strategic positioning within the European defence environment. Through involvement in European programs, Cyprus not only enhances its defence capabilities and creates cooperation opportunities with partners but also contributes to shaping European defence policy. Aristotelous emphasized that this participation provides access to essential expertise and resources for upgrading Cyprus’s national defense and security.
In recent years, Aristotelous noted, relations between Cyprus and the European Defence Agency have significantly improved, marked by successful actions and favorable circumstances. The agency’s view of Cyprus is now notably positive and supportive, with Cyprus being regarded as one of the most active and consistent participating member states.
