Minister of Labour meets EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights

Minister of Labour and Social Security Yiannis Panayiotou on Thursday met with EU Commission for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit. The meeting was held in Gdansk, Poland, on the sidelines of the Euroskills 2023. Panayiotou and Schmit discussed the promotion of better regulation of labour relations both on a national and on an EU level as well as the challenges facing the EU labour force due to the green transition and digital transformation. According to relevant announcement, in statements following the meeting, Panayiotou said the meeting also placed emphasis on the need over the distinction between illegal and legitimate migration which is necessary for Europe. He noted and that they agreed over the need to better utilise European workers, workers from candidate states, as well as labour force from non-EU states in the context of bilateral agreements, adding that Cyprus is promoting actions in this field, utilising best practises used by other member states as well as the EU’s experience. Panayiotou also noted that he discussed with the EU Commissioner the progress of the EU Skills Year outlining aspects of the Cypriot action plan. Furthermore, Panayiotou met with Ukraine’s Minister of Youth and Sport Vladyslav Yatsuk, with whom he exchanged views on the further activation of Ukrainian refugees in Cyprus in the country’s labor market and on supporting the development of Ukrainian human resources in view of the preparation for the future reconstruction of the country and for peace.
