Brussels: Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced financial support for farmers to tackle emerging challenges in agriculture, highlighting the significant impact of prolonged drought on Cyprus’ farming sector. The Minister made these remarks during the EU Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries meeting held in Brussels on November 18, 2024.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Dr. Panayiotou pointed out that climate change, international instability, and the necessity for generational renewal are the primary factors affecting EU markets. She elaborated on the severe drought in Cyprus, which has resulted in agricultural losses of up to 100% in certain areas. Additionally, she underscored issues such as rising production costs, a lack of borrowing options for agricultural investments, and the challenges faced by Cypriot agriculture due to its geographical isolation from mainland European markets.
Furthermore, the Minis
ter highlighted the importance of enhancing rural resilience to crises, both within and outside the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy. She informed her EU counterparts about Cyprus hosting the 24th annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), reaffirming Cyprus’ dedication to the sustainable management of tuna and other migratory species.
Dr. Panayiotou also expressed support for Spain’s proposal to extend the timeline for certain investments, aiming to ease the completion process for beneficiaries and prevent the forfeiture of EU funds. She urged the European Commission to act favorably on this request, underlining its significance for ongoing agricultural projects.
