President of the European Council Charles Michel informed on Monday evening Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, about the content of his discussion earlier on Monday in Vilnius, with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned.
More specifically, Michel briefed Christodoulides about what he discussed with Erdogan as regards the President’s proposal for a more active EU involvement in efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus problem, as well as about EU-Turkey relations.
The President of the European Council and President Christodoulides will have the opportunity to have a more thorough tete-a-tete discussion when the latter will be in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday for the EU-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Summit.
Michel and Erdogan met in Vilnius where the NATO Summit is taking place today and tomorrow.
Michel wrote on Twitter that they had a good meeting and that they explored opportunities ahead to bring EU – Turkey cooperation back to the forefront and re-energise their relations.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
