Nicosia: Internationally acclaimed Cypriot composer, Marios Joannou Elia, shared with CNA that composing music for the Olympic Flame represents the pinnacle of artistic responsibility and offers a singular opportunity to fuse contemporary creation with the universal values of Olympism.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Hellenic Olympic Committee has announced that Elia will be the composer for the music at the Olympic Flame Lighting and Handover Ceremonies. Elia, who is recognized globally for his work as a composer, artistic director, and academic, has also been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation by the Council of Ministers of Cyprus. This appointment was made public on Thursday.
In his statements to CNA, Elia expressed enthusiasm over these significant advancements in his career. He delineated his objectives for his collaboration with the Hellenic Olympic Committee and his new role as Chair of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation's Board of Directors. Elia's assignment to compose for the Olympic Flame Lighting and Handover Ceremonies stands as one of his most notable international collaborations. He explained to CNA that his compositions will be integral to the official Olympic Games ceremonies, working alongside Artemis Ignatiou, the artistic director, and the creative teams from both the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee.
The inaugural composition will be showcased on September 10, 2026, at the Panathenaic Stadium during the Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. The collaboration will extend into the next Olympic quadrennial, culminating at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
