Limassol fire in remission, firefighting crews on high alert

The fire in Limassol district is in remission since Monday night but all firefighting crews are on high alert for possible reignitions.

The situation last night was monitored via drones by the Police and Fire Department and all ground forces were on alert for immediate intervention. Aircrafts are operating today.

Yesterday there was a serious flare-up in the village of Apaisia but was dealt with quickly.

Aircrafts from Israel which landed on the island following a request by the Government will support the rest of the helicopters from Greece, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. The European RescEU mechanism was also activated, at the request of the Cyprus Civil Defence. The State of Palestine expressed its intention to help if needed, while the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar contacted President Christodoulides.

Electricity has also been restored in all affected areas.

Justice and Public Order Minister Anna Koukkides-Procopiou visited the coordination center at Paramytha village and in statements last night she noted that this is the end of an extremely difficult day.

She said that all authorities are worried about flare-ups and therefore all are in high alert. She expressed the state’s gratitude to all the forces who are working tirelessly to put out the fire completely, pointing out that they did everything possible to protect human lives.

Koukkides also thanked all foreign states which are supporting Cyprus with aircrafts and other assistance as well as the Electricity Authority for ensuring that supply was restored rapidly. The Minister recalled that all coordination was put under the Permanent Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry, following a recent Cabinet decision.
