Lazio comms chief De Angelis quits after Bologna bombers row

Lazio regional communications chief Marcello De Angelis quit on Tuesday after a recent string of rows including saying that the 1980 Bologna rail station bombers, one of whom he is related to by marriage, were innocent.

De Angelis, a former rightist militant, also got flak over one of his ‘identity’ rock band’s songs saying Jews are a “merchant race” and over a December 21 social media post of a candelabrum allegedly echoing Nazi war criminal Heinrich Himmler’s greetings to the winter solstice.

De Angelis, spokesman for rightwing Lazio Governor Francesco Rocca, faced quit calls from the centre left and leftwing opposition.

As well, Premier Giorgia Meloni was urged to distance herself from his statements.
