Kallas Highlights Importance of Cyprus Issue in Turkey’s EU Accession Talks

Ankara: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has emphasized that the Cyprus issue is among the topics that need to be addressed in the framework of Turkey’s EU accession process. Kallas made this statement during an interview with Anadolu News Agency, ahead of her upcoming visit to Turkey.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kallas outlined her intention to discuss regional developments and Turkish-EU relations during her visit. When questioned about Turkey’s status as an EU candidate country, Kallas remarked that Turkey remains in candidate status, but the process is currently at a standstill. She emphasized the necessity of addressing various issues, particularly the Cyprus issue, human rights, the rule of law, and fundamental rights, in line with the requirements of the 27 EU member states.

Cyprus has experienced division since 1974, following the invasion and occupation of the island’s northern third by Turkish troops. Efforts to resolve the situation through UN-led peace talks have repeatedly failed to produce a resolution. The most recent attempt, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, concluded without reaching an agreement.
