Assistant UN SG Miroslav Jenca has conveyed to Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar the continued attention of the UNSG Antonio Guterres on the Cyprus issue.
Jenca, who is on the island since Sunday evening for talks, met on Monday early afternoon with Tatar, following a meeting he had earlier with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.
In statements to the press he said that he had a “very fruitful” discussion with Tatar with whom they covered a lot of issues of common interest.
“I conveyed to Mr. Tatar the continued attention of the Secretary General on the issue. We hope that there will be common ground in the future to resume the peace talks for the benefit of all people,” he said.
“Let’s hope for the best,” he concluded.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
