Italy: Italy is deploying a navy frigate to Cyprus in response to a recent drone strike on a British base located on the island, announced Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This move comes as part of efforts to ensure the security of the European Union's borders amidst rising tensions in the region.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Prime Minister Meloni emphasized that the deployment of the Italian frigate is an act of European solidarity and prevention. She clarified that Italy does not intend to become involved in any conflict, underscoring the nation's neutral stance. The frigate, named Federico Martinengo, is equipped with missiles and manned by a crew of over 160 personnel. It was scheduled to depart from Taranto in southern Italy last Friday.
Meloni further stated that Italy is actively engaged in discussions with the UK, France, and Germany to prevent any further escalation of the situation. The collaboration among these European nations highlights a collective approach to addressing potential security threats in the region.
