Interest Rate Disparities Between Cyprus and Eurozone Persist in August

Jakarta:The disparity between interest rates offered by Cypriot banks and those in the eurozone continued in August, affecting both loans and deposits, as indicated by data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the average interest rate on new household deposits with a maturity of up to one year was 1.35%, an increase from July's 1.27%, but still below the eurozone's average of 2.13%. The National Bank of Greece offered the highest rate at 1.69%, while the Housing Finance Corporation had the lowest at 0.83%.

For outstanding household deposits with up to two-year maturities, the average interest rate was 0.87%, slightly higher than July's 0.84%, yet significantly lower than the eurozone's 1.86%. Jordan Kuwait Bank provided the highest rate of 1.68%, and Bank of Cyprus the lowest at 0.61%.

New deposits by non-financial corporations with up to one-year maturities maintained an average interest rate of 1.56%, unchanged from the previous month, whereas the eurozone average was 2.24%. Ancoria Bank offered the highest rate of 2.20%, contrasting with the Housing Finance Corporation's 0.21%, the lowest.

Outstanding deposits by non-financial corporations with up to two-year maturities had an average rate of 1.26% in August, a decline from 1.34% in July and below the eurozone's 2.28%. The National Bank of Greece provided the highest rate at 1.57%, while Societe Generale had the lowest at 0.93%.

For new housing loans, irrespective of the initial rate fixation period, the average interest rate rose to 3.31% in August from 3.24% in July, compared to the eurozone's 3.62%. Alpha Bank offered the lowest rate at 2.78%, and Bank of Cyprus the highest at 3.54%.

Outstanding housing loans carried an average interest rate of 3.56%, in contrast to the eurozone's 2.53%. The Housing Finance Corporation had the lowest rate at 2.91%, while Bank of Cyprus had the highest at 3.78%.

New loans up to £1 million to non-financial corporations had an average interest rate of 4.39%, a decrease from 4.51% in July. The National Bank of Greece offered the lowest rate at 3.68%, and Banque SBA the highest at 7.16%.

For new loans exceeding £1 million to non-financial corporations, the average interest rate was 4.51%, with Alpha Bank offering the lowest rate at 3.95% and Bank of Cyprus the highest at 5.15%.

Outstanding loans to non-financial corporations had an average interest rate of 4.22%, compared to the eurozone's 3.22%. Eurobank provided the lowest rate at 4.01%, while Societe Generale offered the highest at 5.15%.
